A Special Holiday Playlist for Christmas:
The Best Christmas Songs to Get You in the Holiday Spirit!

Happy Christmas Eve, my friends! Christmas Day is tomorrow already. Can you believe it?

While everyone is completing last minute details of holiday planning, I thought that I would share my second Christmas playlist of the season with our favorites. In fact, this playlist was supposed to be posted first but I didn’t like the way the graphics turned out. Ha! So, I just redid them yesterday after shooting a special cocktail for the New Year. I can’t wait to share the recipe!

If you are still searching for tunes for your own holiday playlist, we hope that our Christmas Playlist – 25 Ultimate Holiday Classics will come in handy. Included are both vintage and new classics. Simply use the links below to pull together your own holiday playlist at YouTube or to sample for your streaming service.

Although this list is hardly complete, and is admittedly subjective with no particular ranking order, The Big Lug and I sat down this past weekend while hanging ornaments on our Christmas tree to jot down our top 25 Christmas songs by our favorite artists and composers…just for you.

No. 1 Song Pick - This Is Christmas by Suzie McNeil

Plus! There is a brilliant ROCKIN’ Christmas song you most likely have not yet heard. It is my #1 pick for you this holiday season. In fact, you simply must stop what you are doing NOW and catch it…in this adorable video by Mathieu Riedl at YouTube. It will definitely get you in the holiday spirit. I promise.

Love. It.

Here is Suzie’s official video:

And this is where you can “meet” Suzie in her “This Is Christmas Promo” video.

Isn’t she fabulous?

The first time I heard the song, “This Is Christmas”, was last year in an entertaining Hallmark Christmas movie, Window Wonderland (2013). At first, I didn’t care for the film due to it’s overall production design with muted tones of blues and grays. However, it grew on me. Big time.

With the two very strong leads, Chyler Leigh playing Sloan and Paul Campbell playing Jake, with Naomi Judd in a supporting role playing Sloan’s mother, their character backstories and chemistry, the overall storyline, script, snappy comedic dialogue and music (Shawn Hook’s amazing vocals in “Two Hearts Set On Fire” and Suzie McNeil’s irresistible “This Is Christmas”), this made-for-television holiday film had me in the Christmas spirit in nanoseconds. Now, I just love it and it’s one of my favorite Hallmark Christmas movies to watch each year.

This Is Christmas”, by Suzie McNeil, is the song you and your guests need to hear to kick off your Christmas party or family gathering. I promise…everyone will LOVE this special holiday song, both children and adults, with its upbeat tempo and nostalgic lyrics.

In fact, I’ve been listening to “This Is Christmas” all last week and this week, along with Sleeper Agent’s “Winter Wonderland” (in my mind, an instant classic), Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Coming To Town”, while in the kitchen doing some wicked holiday baking. Can’t get enough of these tunes! Play. Repeat. That’s all I’ve been doing and highly recommend it.

Before we get to the list(s), sing along with Suzie’s fresh, original and fantastic take on the Christmas song and spread some holiday cheer!

This Is Christmas (song lyrics)

It’s Christmas again and everybody’s home
The fire’s burning bright, outside the lights are glowin’
We all gather ’round to celebrate and cheer
Let’s raise up our glass to another year
It’s that old familiar feeling when there’s magic in the air

It’s the sleighbells ringing ding-a-ling
It’s the choir singing: These Three Kings
Everybody’s feeling happy
It’s Santa’s jolly Ho Ho Ho
When the streets are filling up with snow
Oh Christmas
This is Christmas to me
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, this is Christmas

Dad is holding mom under the mistletoe
As they sing another verse of ‘Let It Snow’ (oh, the weather outside is frightful)
Sarah’s stringing popcorn for the tree
While Laura grabs a candy cane for me
It’s these old familiar feelings when there’s magic in the air

It’s the sleighbells ringing ding-a-ling
It’s the choir singing: These Three Kings
Everybody’s feeling happy
It’s Santa’s jolly Ho Ho Ho
When the streets are filling up with snow
Oh Christmas
This is Christmas

No one can control their excitement when they look under the tree
Trying to teach the little ones not to be too greedy
My heart is filled with love and delight when I’m surrounded by my family

This is Christmas
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, this is Christmas

It’s the sleighbells ringing ding-a-ling
It’s the choir singing: These Three Kings
Everybody’s feeling happy
It’s Santa’s jolly Ho Ho Ho
When the streets are filling up with snow
Oh Christmas
This is Christmas to me

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, this is Christmas to me

So, my friends, get your Christmas party groove on and enjoy this splendid Christmas song by Suzie as well as the vintage classics and new classics we have compiled for you.

Hopefully, there will be some surprises for you along the way.

25 Christmas Songs: The Ultimate Playlist

Our #1 Song Pick to Add to Your Holiday Playlist Now:

  1. This Is Christmas,” Suzie McNeil

Now, onto the lists for the 25 Christmas Songs you need for your holiday playlist.

OK, I cheated. I admit it. It was so incredibly difficult to limit the lists to just 12 songs per list plus our #1 top pick for a total of just 25! Seriously. Instead of just a dozen for each list below, I went with a “baker’s dozen” being a baker and all. This means an extra bonus song in each category—The Vintage Classics and The New & Instant Classics. Then, of course, we listed more favorites in the Honorable Mentions section because we just couldn’t help ourselves. Ha!

There is never self-control when it comes to good music, Christmas songs or cookies. Ever. And, yes…Dean Martin made this small list twice. Sorry, Frank. “Dino Martini” gets me…every single time! My grandmother would be proud.

Enjoy these all-time greats!

The Vintage Classics ~ A Baker’s Dozen:

  1. Sleigh Ride,” Ella Fitzgerald
  2. It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” Andy Williams
  3. The Christmas Song,” Nat King Cole
  4. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” Perry Como
  5. White Christmas,” Bing Crosby
  6. Jingle Bells,” Frank Sinatra
  7. Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” Dean Martin
  8. Santa Baby,” Eartha Kitt
  9. Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” Brenda Lee
  10. Let It Snow,” Dean Martin
  11. Silver Bells,” Johnny Mathis
  12. Jingle Bell Rock,” Bobby Helms
  13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” Judy Garland

Honorable Mentions

Don’t miss these tracks:Silent Night” by Bing Crosby, “Cool Yule” by Louis Armstrong, “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” by Ella Fitzgerald, “That’s What I Want for Christmas” by Nancy Wilson, “Mistletoe and Holly” by Frank Sinatra, “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” by Dean Martin, “Let It Snow!” by Lena Horne, and “A Marshmallow World” by Brenda Lee. I would have given her “Jingle Bell Rock” too, but The Big Lug was very firm on Bobby Helms. I have to admit, after listening to both back-to-back, I agreed with him. However, I won out with Judy Garland’s original version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” We also couldn’t resist “White Christmas” by The Drifters, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Mel Tormé, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Johnny Mathis and “Blue Christmas” by Elvis Presley. Add these holiday songs to your list, too. You won’t regret it.

Did You Know?

  • The classic, “Jingle Bells”, was written in the autumn of 1857 by James Lord Pierpont. The song was originally entitled “One Horse Open Sleigh” and was intended to be a Thanksgiving song to celebrate American Thanksgiving. Over the years, the song has become synonymous with the Christmas holiday and is one of the most performed and most recognizable songs in the world.
  • According to Guinness World Records, “White Christmas” (1942) by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single worldwide, with estimated sales of over 50 million copies. The song recognized as “the best-selling single of all time” was released before the pop/rock singles-chart era and “was listed as the world’s best-selling single in the first-ever Guinness Book of Records (published in 1955) and—remarkably—still retains the title more than 50 years later.”
  • Despite her mature-sounding voice, Brenda Lee recorded “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” when she was only thirteen (13) years old.
  • “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was written by American songwriter Johnny Marks and recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958. Marks specialized in Christmas songs and wrote many other holiday standards, including “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (a hit for Gene Autry), “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (recorded by Burl Ives), “Silver and Gold” (for Burl Ives) and “Run Rudolph Run” (recorded by Chuck Berry).
  • As of December 25, 2011, Nielsen SoundScan estimated total sales of the digital track of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” at 679,000 downloads, placing it fourth on the list of all-time best-selling Christmas/holiday digital singles in SoundScan history.

Heck, just get The Christmas Album by The Manhattan Transfer on CD, as well as Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped In Red, and prepare to get swept away!

Did You Know?

  • Among the many works of American songwriter Johnny Marks is “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, which was based on a poem of the same name, written by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May, Rudolph’s creator. Rudolph first appeared in a 1939 booklet published by Montgomery Ward. A television film based on the story and song first aired in 1964, with Marks himself composing the score.
  • As mentioned earlier, Johnny Marks specialized in Christmas songs and also wrote, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (a hit for Brenda Lee), “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (recorded by Burl Ives), “Silver and Gold” (for Burl Ives) and “Run, Rudolph, Run” (recorded by Chuck Berry) also sometimes titled “Run, Run, Rudolph”.

Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix - World's BestEvery time I listen to Brenda Lee belting out “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, even though it is a Swing tune, I am dance figure skating (albeit to a faster tempo) in my head to the figure skating dance called the Rocker Foxtrot. I loved the skating maneuver called, The Swing Rocker. Once mastered, it’s such a wicked-fun lady’s dance move! I also do the same thing with her “Jingle Bell Rock”. Can’t help it. (Skaters out there…you do the same thing, too, right? I skate and choreograph to everything I hear…while baking, of course. LOL.) Check out the link to see a nifty demonstration of The Swing Rocker if you are into watching figure skating.
