It’s a Graveyard Smash:
Bloody Zombie Cocktail

“The zombies were having fun…”
~ Monster Mash

My friends, grab your best cocktail swords…it’s going to get bloody! That is, the classic cocktail, the Zombie Cocktail, is going bloody this Halloween.

Looking for a wicked cocktail to serve friends at your next Halloween bash? Search no more. Wicked Good Kitchen has you covered!

It’s going to be a graveyard smash. I promise.

You and your party-going friends, and zombies, vampires and ghouls everywhere, are going to have a new favorite cocktail for Halloween—the Bloody Zombie Cocktail.

This Halloween, instead of celebrating with regular ol’ orange and black party decorations, it’s going to be all about black rum and the blood orange.

Well, like Boris, I was working in the lab late one night (last October) and conjured up this new cocktail. And all this past year, I kept hoping and praying no one else would create and publish it before me! Well, my hope is that this extraordinary cocktail will be enjoyed by others and become a new classic. If you are a regular reader, you know that I am all about striving to create new classics!

My friends, I am telling you, in a single word, this cocktail is…euphoric. My inner goth was utterly delirious. The scent of the fresh cut and squeezed blood oranges, besides the ethereal flavor, just casts a spell on me. Fans of the blood orange out there know what I am talking about! Blood oranges are bewitching. Everyone among “the living” must indulge in blood oranges any way they can. If you have never experienced a blood orange cocktail, such as with a Margarita, you don’t know what you are missing. They will leave you spellbound.

Our Bloody Zombie Cocktail will give you one big jolt, that’s for sure. Forget all about getting a “jolt from ol’ Boris’ electrodes” à la the Monster Mash.

Seriously, all you need is this cocktail in your hand while the scene is rockin’ and you and your favorite coffin-banger friends are digging the sounds of the band playing the Monster Mash, with “The Crypt-Kicker Five” on vocals, at your next Halloween bash.

Okay. Enough silliness…for now.

Let’s get down to how this cocktail came to be and how it compares to the original tropical or “tiki cocktail” known as the Zombie Cocktail conjured up by restaurateur Don the Beachcomber back in the day. In this case, “back in the day” was in the 1930s.

First, a little history for you…

According to cocktail expert David Wondrich, over at Esquire magazine, “The Zombie” is the mother of all freak drinks. Below is an excerpt from his article on the Zombie Cocktail.

From Zombie Drink Recipe: How To Make The Perfect Zombie:

Although it may seem like a product of the Pu-Pu platter 1950s, it actually hearkens back to the late ’30s, when Hollywood restaurateur Don the Beachcomber supposedly cooked it up as liquid CPR for some poor SOB experiencing death by hangover–thereby delivering him into the clutches of Baron Samedi (you know, the bald guy in Live and Let Die). In any case, it caught on, especially at the Hurricane Bar at the 1939 New York World’s Fair (perhaps that explains the Trilon and Perisphere). By the time tiki culture hit its stride, the Zombie, with all its evil, no-more-than-two-to-a-customer charm, was ubiquitous. Unfortunately, that didn’t mean it was any good. In fact, it’s not. But no matter–sometimes the urge will strike anyway. We can respect that.

Our crack laboratory staff here at Esquire, after five rounds of destructive testing–and believe you me, those guys were pretty destroyed, even Pete, who somehow managed to… aahhh, never mind–have been brought to the verdict (well, carried, actually) that the Zombie is not for home consumption. If you absolutely, positively must crawl into the Z-Hole, let a member of the Black Vest Brotherhood perform the necessary rites. That way, at least, you won’t have all those empty rum bottles to hide.”

David also warns in his recipe, “Supply a straw and, after two, a hammock. After three: a stretcher.”

Don’t crawl into the Z-Hole, my friends!

Now, let’s get to the nitty-gritty of today’s recipe.

While the blend of rums remains the same with white, golden and dark, along with a splash of 151-proof rum typical of the Zombie Cocktail, as well as fresh lemon and lime juices found in many recipes, and the classic fresh mint sprigs for garnish, here is the breakdown on how the classic Zombie Cocktail magically turns autumnal and blood-red for Halloween:

Classic Zombie Cocktail                                    Bloody Zombie Cocktail
Papaya, Passion Fruit and Pineapple Juices      Blood Orange and Cranberry Juices
Apricot Brandy or Orange Curacao                     Blood Orange Liqueur
Grenadine                                                          Pom Wonderful® Pomegranate Juice
Superfine Sugar                                                 Agave Nectar or Pure Maple Syrup
Cherries or Pineapple for Picks                         Cranberries or Raspberries for Picks
Orange Slices for Cocktail Glass Rims                Blood Orange Slices for Cocktail Glass Rims

Note: Not surprising, and as is quite common with “tiki cocktails”, the original recipe is disputed. However, my base recipe relied on several to create an original recipe, with classic ingredients, from which to build upon.

Did You Know?

Zombie Punch, yet another “tiki cocktail”, has been attributed to Don the Beachcomber as well.

I hope that our Bloody Zombie Cocktail will catch on in a flash, like the Monster Mash, and that it will be the hit of the land—a graveyard smash!

The lyrics to Monster Mash crack me up and remind me of all the Halloween parties my sister and I attended at the ol’ skating rink when we were children and competed in roller-skating. It also reminds me of several college Halloween bashes. Kids and adults alike enjoy this goofy-wacky song so fitting for Halloween parties.

Monster Mash Song Lyrics

I was working in the lab, late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my monster from his slab, began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise

He did the mash, he did the monster mash
The monster mash, it was a graveyard smash
He did the mash, it caught on in a flash
He did the mash, he did the monster mash

From my laboratory in the castle east
To the master bedroom, where the vampires feast
The ghouls all came from their humble abodes
To get a jolt from my electrodes

They did the mash, they did the monster mash
The monster mash, it was a graveyard smash
They did the mash, it caught on in a flash
They did the mash, they did the monster mash

The zombies were having fun, the party had just begun
The guests included Wolf Man, Dracula and his son

The scene was rockin’, all were digging the sounds
Igor on chains, backed by his baying hounds
The coffin-bangers were about to arrive
With their vocal group, “The Crypt-Kicker Five”

They played the mash, they played the monster mash
The monster mash, it was a graveyard smash
They played the mash, it caught on in a flash
They played the mash, they played the monster mash

Out from his coffin, Drac’s voice did ring
Seems he was troubled by just one thing
He opened the lid and shook his fist
And said, “Whatever happened to my Transylvania twist?”

It’s now the mash, it’s now the monster mash
The monster mash, and it’s a graveyard smash
It’s now the mash, it’s caught on in a flash
It’s now the mash, it’s now the monster mash

Now everything’s cool, Drac’s a part of the band
And my monster mash is the hit of the land
For you, the living, this mash was meant too
When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you

Then you can mash, then you can monster mash
The monster mash, and do my graveyard smash
Then you can mash, you’ll catch on in a flash
Then you can mash, then you can monster mash

I can just imagine Don the Beachcomber shaking his fist from his crypt, not unlike Drac in Monster Mash, shouting, “What happened to my Zombie Cocktail?”

Well, Don. There’s now a new one called Bloody Zombie Cocktail and, thanks to your original, it’s a graveyard smash!

P.S. Warning: Go easy on this one as several of “the living” have attested to the strength of this cocktail over the years. Just as the name implies, imbibe too much and you may very well turn into a zombie. Do drink and drive responsibly and safely, my friends. 🙂

Recipe Notes

Tips:

For Spicy Bloody Zombie Cocktail: Add a cinnamon stick as a garnish to cocktail glass.

Although fresh squeezed blood orange juice is highly recommended for this cocktail recipe, fresh squeezed orange juice may be substituted in a pinch.

Select the freshest organic fruits and berries for the ultimate in health benefits and the very best cocktail experience.

Be sure to use a large enough cocktail glass to float the high-proof rum on top, if using.

Some recipes for Zombie Cocktails call for lighting the cocktail using 151-proof rum on fire. We do not recommend this for safety reasons.

Leftover blood orange or cranberry juice? Freeze into ice cubes for cocktails or popsicles for a refreshing treat!
