Hello, my friends! Do I ever have a life-changing book recommendation for you. In fact, this post is the beginning of a series called Life-Changing Books here on the blog.
It is no secret that the direction of my blog has been to offer up the very best in wicked good recipes—whether it be totally off-the-chain wickedness for indulgent baked treats as well as pure all natural goodness in special diet recipes that are either dairy free, gluten free, grain free, paleo or vegan, or even a detox juice recipe as with Pink Lady Skinny Detox Power Juice. This has been my mission from day one.
Truly, I hold a strong belief in balance when it comes to my food blog. In fact, other food bloggers that are successful embrace this same concept—with four of my favorites being Averie Cooks (Averie just posted irresistible Tagalongs Cookie Bars but she also offers recipes for healthy treats and smoothies), Sally’s Baking Addiction (Sally recently posted a calorie-conscious recipe for 140 Calorie Cheesy Sausage Quiche but she also offers up irresistible cookie recipes), Cooking Classy (Jaclyn just posted Chocolate Frosted Peanut Butter Bars yet she posts healthy recipes) and Damn Delicious® (Chung Ah recently posted 15 Best Healthy and Easy Salad Recipes but also posts indulgent treats). In addition, my friend, Julia, of Julia’s Album, offers indulgent baked treats as well as healthy gluten free recipes, such as her delectable Browned Butter Pecan Sandies and healthy Pumpkin Quinoa Chili. It’s all about balance.
The fact is, while we all strive to have a healthy diet and lifestyle, we all enjoy an occasional indulgent treat. That’s life, right?
Therefore, do not fear. Nothing here on the blog has changed except for the fact that I am finally adding book and cookbook reviews as well as diet and nutrition articles. Finally, there will be posts under the Diet & Nutrition pull down menu, under Personal Care, from my top nav bar. 😉
My Results After Following The Detox Miracle Sourcebook Protocol

In a previous post, I had promised to share my results after following a three-week fruit-only detox. But first, I will share some background so you can fully appreciate the results. My mind was blown and I hope yours will be, too.
As many of my closest food blogging friends know, I was away from the blog for several months last spring, summer and fall. Like, for eight (8) months. It was quite the terrifying time as we simply could not figure out why I was experiencing recurrent allergic anaphylactic shock. Each and every day, all I could do was read and read and read to research my so-called “chronic condition” to find answers. And, pray. My life as I knew it came to a screeching halt.
The solutions offered up to me were the drug Prednisone, as a temporary fix, or chemotherapy. Seriously? Well, as it turns out, this is pure hogwash as I was able to find a way to heal on my own. It has been a true miracle, I tell you. In fact, I am beyond immensely grateful to God that I have found real answers—the truth.
My dear friends and readers, never underestimate the power of prayer. My prayers were answered many times over and in so many ways. In return, I made a promise to the Lord above to help others. So, forgive me for going a bit off course from my usual recipe posts, which are inclusive to all diets.
Although I have been quite shy about sharing “my story” here on the blog either via link to a dedicated page or blog post, I think the best course of action to help others is simply to highlight it by providing some background, perhaps with some facts, along with providing useful information in a series of articles starting with this one. My heart goes out to all of those who are currently confused, suffering in needless pain and yet so desperate and in need of a helping hand to lead in a direction to heal. I know what it feels like to be lost and near hopeless. However, never once did I give up and neither should you. Everyone deserves to live a happy, healthy, normal life.
How could someone who follows the paleo diet become so ill?
This is the question I kept asking myself daily during my illness. How could this be happening to me when I follow such a healthy diet? I mean, my blog and my reputation were just starting to get noticed by the biggest brands in food and lifestyle. During those long months, I felt as though I was living in a nightmare and could not wake up. I cried seven oceans many times over and even wondered if I could even return to recipe development and food blogging as food became terrifying to me.
There was one thing I was doing to better my health that I believe strongly in. However, somehow, unbeknownst to me, there was something harming me due to an allergy diagnosed just about 10 years ago now.
Since mid-April of last year, I was following strict paleo protocol. I mean no cheating whatsoever. (Summer was coming which means “conference season” in the food blog world and I wanted to go!) In fact, my “cheats” tend to be harmless and low carb, such as aged cheese or wine, or coconut (dairy free) ice cream and dark chocolate, as I am insulin resistant. Having once been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, this news was enough to scare me into taking control of my health through diet. In fact, I have lived a low carb lifestyle for many years before finally adopting the primal/paleo approach in 2010.
During this time last spring, since winter had ended and spring had finally arrived, I switched up adding honey to my warm mug of lemon water to fresh, cold homemade lemonade sweetened with pure stevia extract. Drinking lemon water first thing each morning is something I have been doing since the spring of 2012 and it is something I actually look forward to each and every morning!
So what went wrong? Well, again, we simply could not understand why I kept experiencing recurrent anaphylactic shock with a burning, itching, red rash (hives) that felt like your worst sunburn times ten. It burned like Hades. In fact, I did not learn what was causing it until Halloween day, October 31st last year.
On that fateful day, I went to Amazon.com to place a same-day delivery order—some non-food items to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project for Halloween as all we had on hand were Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups and I wanted to offer something allergy free. (Living just outside Indianapolis has me incredibly spoiled with a nearby Amazon distribution center. Often, same-day delivery costs less than UPS Second Day Air service. I just love Amazon!) So, what did I buy? These wicked cool Zombie Finger Puppets and a few other fun items that caught my eye. Am I ever glad I ordered those puppets. Although each item was a hit, the Zombie Finger Puppets were the runaway hit of the night. Everyone wanted one! 🙂
A Side Note: If you do not know what the Teal Pumpkin Project is, it is a charitable program designed to promote safety, inclusion and respect of individuals managing food allergies–and to keep Halloween a fun, positive experience for all.

Anyway, since I could not find my favorite brand of pure stevia extract locally, or even at iHerb.com where I usually purchase my supplements, I thought it would be prudent to add it to my Amazon order since stevia is a lightweight add-on for shipping.
To this day, I do not know why I scrolled down the page at Amazon before adding the stevia extract to my cart. Divine Providence perhaps? Because I was so used to reading reviews for supplements, etc. over the summer, it could have just become second nature. At any rate, I started to scroll down past the Q & A section to reach the customer reviews. In the Q & A section, the word “maltodextrin” jumped out at me. Say, what?
Immediately, I clicked to read more. Believe me when I tell you that I avoid this food additive like the plague. In fact, I have mentioned it here on the blog a couple of times to warn about its high glycemic index—especially for those who are insulin resistant like me or diabetic. Don’t believe me? Just enter the word “maltodextrin” in my blog’s search box.
In the Q & A section at Amazon.com, I found the following question:
“Is this the version of NO maltodextrin added?”
And, this answer:
“We just called the company. According to their customer service rep, this stevia has ALWAYS had maltodextrin in it. He said that it’s just residue from the machinery. He refused to comment on why they’re suddenly including it on their labels or why their label used to guarantee no additional ingredients if it had maltodextrin. Then he invited us to buy from someone else if we don’t like it. So we are.”
As per the helpful answer above, and the many customer reviews, and as you will see in the images below, my bottle of Kal® brand “Pure” Stevia Organic Extract showed a label that had the word “None” listed under “Other ingredients” as well as the words “NO calories”.
During this time I was drinking my lemonade sweetened with this stevia, I had gained an immense amount of weight (26 pounds) in a very short time. This just proved to me that this product containing maltodextrin was responsible for my illness. Not only did I gain the weight, I experienced the most piercing migraine headaches and painful stomach aches known to man as well as incapacitating endometrial pain. Maltodextrin is made from corn and contains mold. I am highly allergic to mold and, therefore, started experiencing anaphylactic shock.
Pure Stevia Extract That You Can Trust
Pictured below is the pure stevia extract that I now enjoy adding to my tea (including detox teas), warm lemon water, lemonade, smoothies, etc., for sweetening. It is by Stevia Select and, of course, I found it at Amazon.com, here. 🙂 I am so grateful that I found this real pure stevia extract. In fact, this brand of stevia delivers exactly what it promises on the front label, which reads, “diabetes friendly.”
Because I have tested this brand of pure stevia extract, by actually “putting rubber to the road” by using my glucometer (glucose meter) after ingesting it, and experiencing no blood sugar spikes, I know this stevia extract is pure and has no fillers that mess with blood glucose levels.

How Does Anaphylactic Shock Recur?
Once the body experiences anaphylactic shock, the body’s mast cells “remember” or “recall” the invading toxin (in this case, mold) by releasing histamine. This body physiology is referred to as “cell memory”.
Since mast cells are located throughout bodily tissues and organs, pain can be felt during the histamine reaction which can manifest itself in migraine headaches, severe stomach pain and can even cause endometriosis pain. As for skin, it can appear as a terrible burning red hives rash known as urticaria also known as chronic urticaria. This is a photo of me taken in early August of last year with my hair up and coconut oil on my skin. Be forewarned. It is a bit scary. During this time, I lived in my husband’s unbuttoned business shirts with my hair up as I was quite literally a hot mess.
At this point, I instinctively knew that I needed to detox and put myself on an alkaline diet made up of fruit and vegetables. I looked at charts found online and selected the most alkaline fruits, dried fruits, vegetables and seeds. It wasn’t long before I found Dr. Morse.
About My “Miracle Max”, Dr. Morse
One day, while visiting Dr. Mercola’s site, Mercola.com, I found the following exchange in the comments section:
“Like general allergies, eczema is caused by stagnant lymph that has backed up and is not filtering and draining properly. A significant portion of your lymph system resides right below your epidermis (skin). When the lymph becomes stagnant and toxic, those toxins and cellular wastes will literally come out of your skin. Because those toxins are highly acidic (which causes the stagnation in the first place), they will cause your skin to become red, scaly, and itchy. You will never get rid of your eczema simply by treating the red rash–that’s “medical” thinking. The lymph must be cleansed for a permanent solution. I know of no one with more clinical experience with lymphatic cleansing that Dr. Robert Morse, ND. He discusses his lymphatic cleanses and the science behind them on his series of videos on YouTube.”
“@hemicuda, Thanks for mentioning Dr. Robert Morse, ND. I watched his five part series titled “Great Lymphatic System” and what he is saying makes sense. If the lymphatic system is stagnant from an acidic environment the only way for the body to excrete is via the skin, hence eczema. He says adding a lot of fruits in the diet will help make the lymphatic system work properly because the fruits are alkaline. I am going to watch his hour long presentation on detoxing.”
To that final comment, I would only add (after learning from Dr. Morse via his book, The Detox Miracle Sourcebook, and his popular YouTube video series) that the lymph system gets cleansed through a fruit-only detox diet not only from the fruits being alkaline, but because the fruits are also astringent.
An astonishing thing to learn (or re-learn because I may have forgotten from Human Biology class), is that the body’s lymph system makes up about 75% of all bodily fluids. With it being our waste system, and blood being the fluid that carries nutrients to cells, it is extremely important to not have an acidic and stagnant lymphatic system!
Our bodies simply need to get rid of waste, not hold onto it causing a toxic environment that invites disease.
My Whole Foods Plant-Based/Paleo Diet
Although I am not a fruitarian (the diet that Steve Jobs strongly believed in, but much to his regret in the end did not follow to heal his cancer due to pressure from physicans and his family), I have now fully embraced the fruitarian raw diet as a large part of my paleo lifestyle that is essentially 80/20. Most paleos follow the “80/20 rule”, which means we follow the diet 80% of the time whilst allowing 20% for “being human” which allows the occasional treat. In fact, my diet today is best described as a paleo/raw/vegan diet or simply, a whole foods plant-based diet. And, I could not be happier or healthier!

My Review of The Detox Miracle Sourcebook
In short, this post is more of a testimonial by nature and my book review is really a review of the protocol outlined inside the book. Given that, my “review” consists of just two words: It works.

Below you will find two (2) photos of my urine test strips—one before and one after a three-week all-fruit detox diet as outlined by Dr. Morse. In addition, you will find a photo of the side of the product container outlining possible results.
My mind was blown with these results, my friends. Blown. After being told by doctors to limit my fruit because I am insulin resistant, I never thought that I could achieve results like this—by only eating fruit.
Essentially, what happened is that not only did I lose the entire 26 pounds I had gained after ingesting (unbeknownst to me) maltodextrin each day in my homemade lemonade from the stevia sweetener, I had actually started to metabolize the natural sugars (fructose and glucose) in fruit. Furthermore, I was also burning fat (as the second test strip shows, I was in ketosis or spilling ketones, due to the darker pink square) and my headaches, stomach aches, severe nausea, blurry vision and endometrial pain were finally GONE after my body had been forced into hyperglycemia by the maltodextrin. Amazing!
Look closely and see how the GLU (glucose) had gone from dark brown on my urine test strip, which indicates the highest level of glucose in my urine to going totally bright aqua blue, which indicates the lowest level of glucose in my urine. I was ecstatic!
Confirming this outcome after just three (3) short weeks of eating all fruit, I tested my blood glucose level with my glucometer. Yep! Dr. Morse was right. My blood glucose level had stabilized well below normal (in the low 70s) whereas before it was incredibly high (above 200) due to ingesting maltodextrin that was not listed on the product label of my so-called “pure” stevia extract powder.
By eating a diet entirely of fruit for a given length of time, it is possible, to not only detox and feel better by healing, but to metabolize sugars, lose weight and stabilize blood glucose levels. Imagine that!
My friends, this is earth-shattering good news! Do you know what this means? It means that Dr. Morse is correct about diabetes. It is not a blood glucose problem, it is a sugar metabolism problem!
Do you still want more confirmation than this? So did I! Honestly, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and experienced firsthand. For some reason, I needed confirmation from the medical community. And, boy…did I ever find it!

So what does this all mean?
Well, when you consume the sugar God and nature intended, in a perfect ratio of 1:1, natural glucose to fructose, along with the chemically bonded fiber and phytonutrients, our bodies metabolize the fruit sugars and do not treat them as toxins.
Therefore, I hypothesize that my body needed to relearn how to metabolize sugar. Now, I don’t have any problems consuming sugar. But, this is my experience. You may have different results.
An Interesting Fact About Two Sugars
Here is an interesting fact about two sugars. Pure maple syrup is alkaline yet refined granulated sugar is acidic. Therefore, just imagine how acidic sugar substitutes and food additives like maltodextrin can be! Maltodextrin has a glycemic index higher than beer and double that of regular table sugar. In fact, maltodextrin clocks in between 105 to 150 on the glycemic index scale while regular table sugar is at just 65.
Many natural sugars are good for us with added nutrition. However, fructose, when refined and isolated, say in HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), our bodies treat it like a toxin. However, once again, when fructose is consumed along with the chemically bonded fiber in fruits, and phytonutrients, our bodies do not recognize the fructose as a toxin!
Therefore, there is no need to restrict fruit intake. Right? This was a HUGE breakthrough and paradigm shift for me. God just amazes me!
